Reunion - Activities Around Leavenworth

One of our grandsons is an avid fisherman.
He saw Washington's rivers and lakes and
dreamed of the fish just waiting to be caught.
Here he looks longingly at the Wenatchee River in the backyard of the house we rented. Salmon and trout jumped in the river - safe in the knowledge they were protected. No fishing in this part of the Wenatchee River.

Washington State is serious about protecting its fish. The rules are many and very complex. We tried wading our way through this 8 1/1 x 11 booklet filled with 150 pages of small print - rules about who could fish where and when - and how.

Tuesday two of the grandsons & Grandpa & Grandma Todd went fishing while the rest of the group went horseback riding.
The Icicle River was the place to fish. People under 15 could fish without a license anywhere along the river. The challenge - find a place where the river was fairly accessible from the road.

The bank was too steep here

Lures got caught in the trees and bushes here

After trying four or five spots, our fisherman grandson concluded the water was too turbulent for fishing.

We visited a nearby salmon hatchery. Millions of salmon are hatched here and released into the river. We saw Native Americans fishing in the river by the hatchery. Non Native Americans aren’t allowed to fish so close to the hatchery.
