Sharing with a Friend - and Stories

One of the best parts of making cookies is
sharing with a friend
Michael shares with Pasha, our Shetland Sheepdog
November 1969

This was in the old days,
before anyone was worried about getting sick from eating raw eggs
(or from sharing with a dog)

Bottom two photos were taken at our rental house on Oxley Road on the west side of Columbus, (south side of West Broad Street near Lincoln Village). We lived there after John got out of the Air Force and before we bought our home on Harvest Street in Dublin, Ohio.

The small rocking chair - given to Michael by John's parents. They said it was a sample chair - used by salesmen so people could see what the furniture looked like. The chair has traveled around the country with one of our children.

An antique burled walnut roll top secretary is in the background of the middle picture. John and I bought it at an auction in Cincinnati. I think it cost just $150. It was a rainy day and not many people came to the auction. It was in wonderful condition. One of the top bookcase doors had a burn mark on the lower edge. I liked to think that came from some ancient person working at the desk with only a candle for light. The bookcase door was open and got singed. The desk had a writing surface that pulled out. John replaced whatever was on it with a beautiful piece of leather. There were wonderful pigeon holes and several small drawers in the desk portion. Underneath was a long drawer the width of the secretary and below that two doors with shelves behind them. The top bookcases had doors with glass in them. If I remember correctly, it appeared to be old glass. The very top of the secretary was unfinished. We always figured there was a fancy curlicue piece there are one time. We were living in Oxford, Ohio when we bought the secretary. I had graduated from Miami; John was finishing his senior year. The secretary is now with one of our children.

Bottom picture - The antique marble top buffet is in the back right. John and I bought it at an auction in Plain City, Ohio. Would you believe I still have the receipt? It cost $80 on September 26, 1969! It was burled walnut and matched the secretary. The whole piece was in wonderful condition. We were told it was unusual that a marble top that size would have survived so long in one piece. That marble top buffet made the trek across country with us. The marble top required its own custom-made wood box for the trip. The buffet has two drawers on top and then shelves with doors underneath. The lock used to work with a key. Somehow the key was lost in the move.

Pasha - John and I bought Pasha while we were living in Oxford, Ohio. John was finishing his senior year at Miami. I had already graduated. Pasha made the trip to Arizona with us while John was in the Air Force. I think Pasha left us sometime while we were living on Oxley Road. Children would come into our yard and tease the dog, who was on a leash. He snapped at a few children, no bites, and we were told we had an "attractive nuisance" and would be responsible if anyone got bitten. Pasha went to live with a family that lived in the country, somewhere near Springfield I think.

I started out to write just about the fun of eating cookie dough off the beaters. Look where it led me! Congratulations for sticking with the stories.

You young folks who are reading this - Just think - 20-30 years from now you'll have a story - or two- to go with every picture!
