Looking Back to March 7, 2011

March 7, 2011 we arrived in Kirkland, Washington and started a new chapter in our lives. My journal entry for the day brings back memories.

We spent the previous night in Boise, Idaho and woke up to a snowstorm. That helped us determine our route to Kirkland. Initially we were going through Missoula to see Patrick, David and Carol, but the snow made the mountain passes between Missoula and Kirkland too treacherous.

The Cascade Mountains were beautiful as we drove over them and into Kirkland and our new life amidst mountains, evergreens, and water! We picked up our key and garage door opener from Michael at his office and headed out to our new home.

Some of our first thoughts -according to my journal - The garage was hard to get into. It took us a few days to figure out the best angle for getting the car in somewhat easily. Then there were the 266 boxes on the moving van that was making its way across country. Where in the world were we going to put everything?! I had comments like - "We noticed things we hadn’t noticed before [about the townhouse] and wondered what we were thinking. Why didn’t we realize how much stuff we had and the fact that it wouldn’t all fit in the townhouse? We thought we downsized but I think we should have approached it by tossing out much [more] of what was in the basement."

We arrived on a Monday. The moving van would arrive on Saturday. Michael and Pamela had offered for us to stay at their place, but we opted to stay in the townhouse so we could get acquainted with the neighborhood. Michael and Pamela set up some air mattresses, table and chairs for us.

There is a lot to be said for living VERY simply, without a lot of stuff, for those few days. We immediately began to enjoy Kirkland. We knew we had made a good choice of where to live.

The adventure continues!
