Football Evening

Our grandson took up football last year and was on his high school's freshman team. This year he is on his high school's junior varsity team.  We went to the first game of this season. It was a beautiful evening.

It's fun to listen to the comments of the adults attending last year's games and this one. Our guess is that it's mostly parents and grandparents making up the small cheering section. The scoreboard is usually done by fathers, or tonight a "mathematically challenged high school senior." The crowd often yells instructions and corrections to the scoreboard/clock minder. Tonight they asked for a volunteer to help with the chain. Thought that wasn't my area of expertise so I didn't volunteer.  I've been on the periphery of football for many years and have never picked up many of the rules. Tonight I was trying to figure out what does and doesn't stop the clock. I learned the clock has to be stopped when the chain has to be moved. I do know that a football minute is not a 60 second minute - and that sometimes football games can go on even longer than baseball games for little people.

For the first half of the game we sat in the home school bleachers because the sun was directly in the eyes of the people sitting in the Newport/guest bleachers. We moved over at half time and found a position in the guest bleachers. We could avoid the glare of the sun if we situated ourselves correctly.

We were amazed that some people were still sitting such that they had to stare right into the sun - shielding their eyes from the glare.  Some people shouted to them to move. The response - "Oh, the sun, is that what that is?" and other such remarks. Now the fact is - we're going on almost 45 days with no rain - sunshine every day. But people still talk about all the rain and lack of sunshine - while shielding their eyes from the sun.

Do we do this sometimes - complain about what's lacking when we're surrounded by the very thing we're looking for?

We were happy grandparents. Happy to be there to support our grandson.
