The retirement of Dr. Todd on December 31, 1952, marks a milestone in the nationwide development of programs of education in religion in colleges and universities. Dr. Todd was the main force in founding Indiana School of Religion in 1910, and has stimulated the founding of other schools of religion about the country. A native of Sturgeon, Missouri, Dr. Todd received his AB. degree from Missouri Valley College, AM. from Columbia University, and he also received D.D. degree from Missouri Valley College, L.L.D. from Culver-Stockton College, and Litt.D. from Indiana School of Religion. In 1908 he graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York.
After graduation from college, Dr. Todd taught high school mathematics for two years in Marshall, Missouri, and in 1902 was ordained a minister in the Disciples of Christ Church. He served pastorates at Boonville and Monroe City, Missouri, the 56th Street Church of Disciples, New York City, Presbyterian Church, Brentwood, Long Island, and First Christian Church, Bloomington, Indiana. In 1913 he was President of the Indiana Convention of the Disciples. In addition to his work in Bloomington, for sixteen years from 1936 to 1952 he was Executive Secretary of the Indiana Council on Religion in Higher Education and for fifteen years from 1919 to 1934 University Secretary of the Board of Higher Education of the Disciples of Christ. He has contributed many articles to journals in his field of activity.
For fifteen years Dr. Todd was a member of the University Committee of the Council of Church Boards of Education and made recommendations to Rockefeller Foundations for the founding of schools of religion at state universities. Dr. Todd was one of the pioneers in the ecumenical movement. He was a delegate to the World Conference on Church, Community, and State at Oxford, England, in 1937, and press representative and invited guest to the World Conference on Faith and Order in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the same year. He was a fraternal delegate to the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam in 1948. The same year he studied religion in higher education in a number of European countries. In 1926 he was a member of the Good Will Mission to Mexico.
Dr. Todd and Emily J. Robertson were married June 2, 1903, in Marshall, Missouri, where both of them graduated from Missouri Valley College. The Todds are parents of two sons and a daughter with six grandchildren. Mrs. Todd, after her children were nearly grown, took her M.A in Sociology at Indiana University and did additional graduate work. Both Dr. and Mrs. Todd have served on the faculty of Butler University, he as lecturer in church history and she offering courses in Sociology and the family. Mrs. Todd has aided her husband and the School greatly by acting as hostess and counselor. She is also bookkeeper for the Treasurer and Manager of the Book Shop.
Dr. Todd is a member of the Association of Indiana Teachers of Religion, the National Association of Biblical Instructors, American Oriental Society, and the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. Since 1949 he has been a Director of the Columbia University Alumni Association of Indiana. On April 26, 1952, he was given a citation by the Indiana Council on Religion in Higher Education for his sixteen years of service to that organization.
