Reunion - Country Western Song

Some of you might recall that we sometimes comment on the country western programs that seem to dominate the airways on the trip from Kirkland to Montana. Seems like we always hear at least one song that tickles or touches us. This time we punched our way into a station and middle of a song. Initially we thought the song was about a woman and then we realized the singer was talking about a car - well, a car and a soldier.

As I listened to the words, the tears came. The previous owner of the car left a letter in the glove box - "If you’re reading this, I didn’t make it home" (soldier in Viet Nam War). He goes on to say that whoever gets the car will have Private Malone riding along with him. Then the new owner gets into a fiery crash. Bystanders say they saw a soldier pull him out of the wreckage but no one could find the soldier afterwards.

Sounds corny writing it down but it was an interesting combination of things that took me back in time – how it feels to ride around in a nice car at a certain point in your life; Viet Nam and how that affected me personally as well as my generation and our country; people from the other side being involved in our lives; ...
