School Memories

When I was in elementary school, part of the back to school routine was a stop at Cannon's Cigar Store on Main Street in downtown London. We asked for an empty cigar box. It was just the right size to hold school supplies. I wonder how many children stopped by the store with the same request.

Going through things from Joe's mother and stepfather, we found this cigar box.
The box was full of pictures of Joe and his family. Here's Ray, Maude (Elizabeth/Betty/Joe's mother) and Joe in the mid1950s

Cannon's Cigar Store was donated to the Madison County Historical Society. Pauline Persing blogged about it here. In the post is a picture of newspaper boys holding turkeys. I remember reading somewhere (but can't find it right now) that Dad's brother David is in the picture. I think he's in the back row second boy from the right. Be sure to check out the picture of the cigar store Indian. I remember that Indian out in front of the store.
