Food Storage

We started our adventures with food storage and emergency preparedness back in 1982, not long after we joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Emergency preparedness is emphasized to help in time of crisis whether that crisis is a natural disaster or financial or other personal challenge. We started with wheat and amassed quite a collection of grains, beans, dehydrated and freeze dried foods, 72 hour kits and other items that would help us in an emergency. It was nice to have a basement for all that stuff!

When we decided to move across country, we contacted two moving companies for estimates. Each agent, when reaching our basement, said, "You're Mormon, aren't you!" I guess the food storage was the giveaway. Both agents told us it would be cheaper for us to give away the food storage and restock in Washington. Hauling beans and wheat across the country is expensive.

We followed their counsel and gave away almost all our food storage. Some people used it to start their storage. Others supplemented what they already had.

The pictures above and to the right show much of our food storage in our North Street basement
Now we're slowly rebuilding our food storage. We no longer have a basement. It's good that we have only one car and a two car garage (along with moderate winters and summers). Not long ago we went to the Home Storage Center in Mukilteo to buy wheat, oats and other supplies.

Oats are used for cereal as well as chocolate chip cookies

I use quite a bit of wheat for our wheat raisin bread
In the bread I use equal amounts of red wheat flour and white wheat flour
Some of our food storage - hard red wheat, hard white wheat, oats, lentils, brown rice, flour, white & brown sugar. We get the storage buckets from grocery store bakeries.
