Many of us have had one of those nightmare travel experiences where everything seems to go wrong. Maybe we're scared due to a safety issue or weather event. Maybe we're not feeling well. Perhaps the car breaks down. Perhaps the family dynamics break down and everyone is miserable. Some trips, or parts of trips, can be very difficult.
Jessica Garlick Dyer talks about flying with her husband when they were in the midst of some major personal challenges, including a night at the airport due to a cancelled flight. On their flight were a mom, dad, and teenaged girl who had disabilities. She was very anxious about the flight and repeatedly cried and talked loudly and anxiously with her parents. She kept asking, "It's a short flight, right, Dad?" The father calmly, patiently, and lovingly reassured his daughter that indeed, it was a short flight. This didn't work for very long and the father and daughter went through the same conversation many times. When the plane landed, the girl "exclaimed to her dad excitedly, "It was a great flight! It was a short flight, huh, Dad?"
The author compares this to our journey here on earth. Heavenly Father sees us panic when trials come our way. He lovingly and patiently reassures us that our time here is only a "short flight" and we can do it. He, Jesus Christ, and the Spirit will guide us through the trip. We'll look back on this time and exclaim that it was indeed short and most of it was great!
